Deputy Minister of Justice, General Director of the Special Penitentiary Service, Zviad Mikhanashvili has been responding to the initiative in the framework of „Good Human Rights Stories” (GHRS) of the EU Special Representative for Human Rights in Georgia.

The minister provided EU Special Representative with detailed information about the penitentiary system reform in Georgia.

Kakha Kakhishvili attended the sitting of the Trust Group of the Parliament. The minister provided information regarding secret procurement carried out in 2015-16 years.

Voting process for the 2018 presidential elections is underway in penitentiary establishments. Electoral precincts were opened in nine penitentiary establishments at 08:00 a.m.
According to the legislation of Georgia, accused and convicted persons in the less serious offenses have the right to vote in presidential elections.

On 3 October, 2018, the Special Penitentiary Service informed the lawyers of Ivane Merabishvili about medical studies carried out on September 20, 2018 and sent complete copies of the results (materials from 25 sheets and 3 CD). It should be noted that special penitentiary service has offered to lawyers of convict Ivane Merabishvili to take these documents, but they have not yet taken these documents.

According to the doctor of former Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Vano Merabishvili, the health condition of convict is stable and there is no reason for concern.

On September 26, 2018, the treatment at the “Aversi” hospital showed, that the Horner syndrome is regressed and as the convict confirms to doctors, during last 2 weeks his condition has been significantly improved.
